Scriptures About Prayer
On the Importance and Nature of Prayer
- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”. This highlights the continuous and thankful nature of prayer as a core aspect of the Christian life.
- St. Luke 18:1 – “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint”. This emphasizes the need for perseverance in prayer.
- St. Matthew 6:5-8 – This passage instructs believers not to pray like hypocrites who pray to be seen by others, but to pray in a private, sincere manner.
- Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. This connects prayer to overcoming anxiety and finding peace.
Did you know that when you pray, God hears you? He is listening to your cry, and He will respond in mighty and miraculous ways. Here are a few Scriptures that highlight God’s reaction to the prayers of His children.
On God’s Responsiveness to Prayer
- Jeremiah 33:3 – “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not”. This verse serves as a powerful invitation to seek God, with the promise of a response.
- St. Matthew 7:7-11 – “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you… how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”. This passage uses an analogy to show God’s willingness to provide for those who pray.
- Psalm 145:18 – “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth”. This verse promises that God is close to those who pray sincerely.
- 1 John 5:14-15 – “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him”. This assures believers that God hears prayers that are in line with His will.
On the Power and Practice of Prayer
- James 5:16 – “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working”. This verse speaks to the effectiveness of prayer.
- James 5:13 – “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise”. This indicates that prayer is for all circumstances, both good and bad.
- 1 John 5:14-15 – “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us”. This verse highlights the importance of praying according to God’s will.
Prayer is our most powerful weapon as Christians. It is our direct line to GOD, an opportunity to express our deepest thoughts and desires to our Heavenly Father.
